Without a Face

Looking down from the top of the Board of Trade building in Chicago stands Ceres, the statue without a face.

Day of Adventure

When in the mood for a day of adventure in the city, a train ride into Chicago settles my sense of wandering for a time.

Looking Down At You

Millennium Park in Chicago was the last place I expected to see a hawk, watching in silence on a wall’s edge overlooking Lurie Garden.

White Orchid

On the start of a new year, a beautiful white orchid from the Lincoln Park Conservatory seemed like the perfect first posting of the year.

Orange Button Plant

It is the start of winter but I am thinking of and planning for spring.  One of the projects I am considering  is  planting a butterfly garden.  Among the plants that attract butterflies is an Orange Button Plant like this one that was growing at the Garfield Park Conservatory.

Check back here in the spring to see if my plans for a butterfly garden actually turn into action.  We will see!

African Milk Barrel

You know that old saying – If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it must be . . . . . . a duck!

Well, it’s not always true.  This is not a cactus!   A cactus-like shrub, the African milk barrel is one of many interesting plants at the Garfield Park Conservatory in Chicago.

Not a tree, bush, or cactus

Since this African milk barrel does not tolerate temperatures below 50 degrees, I guess I won’t be growing one in NW Indiana anytime soon.

In the Desert Garden

Also known as a Red Aeonium, this ‘Jack Catlin’ Aeonium was in the desert garden of the Garfield Park Conservatory.

Spring in December

It is Christmas week but it is also spring at the Garfield Park Conservatory in the middle of December.  The beautiful pink blossoms from the mimosa trees attract both butterflies and hummingbirds.
